Bellingham named breakthrough star at 2024 Laureus Awards; Djokovic, Bonmati claim sportsman, sportswoman laurels

Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham has won the ‘Breakthrough of Year’ award at the 2024 Laureus World Sports Awards, while Novak Djokovic clinched the ‘Sportsman of the Year’ award.

The England international has scored 21 times across all competitions and assisted 10 goals which has made him one of the top footballers in the world currently since his big money move from Borussia Dortmund to Madrid last summer

He scored the winner at the Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday as the Los Blancos beat Barcelona in El Classico to move closer to win the La Liga title.

Meanwhile, Djokovic deservedly won the Sportsman of the Year award after winning the Australian Open, French Open and US Open to reach a stunning career tally of 24 Grand Slam singles last year.

In the other categories, Spain and Barcelona midfielder Aitana Bonmati was named the ‘Sportswoman of the Year’; Spain women’s football team was named the ‘Team of the Year’; American gymnast Simone Biles is the ‘Comeback of the Year’.

The ‘Sport for Good’ award went to Fundacion Rafa Nadal; Action ‘Sportsperson of the Year’ award was awarded to Arisa Trew (skateboarding) while Diede de Groot (tennis) was voted the ‘Sportsperson of the Year’ with a disability.
