British visual artist and prominent figure of the 1960s pop art movement, David Hockney, has died at the age of 88.

The Bradford-born artist passed away on Thursday at his residence, barely a month before his 89th birthday.

A statement on Friday by Mr Hockney’s spokesperson, Erica Bolton, described the late painter as “one of the most important figures in contemporary art in both the 20th and 21st centuries.”

She said, “The celebrated British artist David Hockney, one of the most important figures in contemporary art in both the 20th and 21st centuries, passed away peacefully at home on 11 June 2026, one month short of his 89th birthday.

“David Hockney’s enduring legacy reflects his underlying enthusiasm for life, his outstanding sense of humour, his immense generosity and his investigative curiosity encapsulated by his signature phrase: Love Life.”

Ms Bolton stated that Mr Hockney’s seven-decade career was characterised by “his multimedia approach in image making, an intellectual inquiry into the nature of depiction and perspective, and a sustained commitment to celebrating and portraying the world around him.”

She disclosed that details of the late painter’s memorials would follow in due course.

Reacting, the director of Tate Britain art museum in London, Alex Farquharson, described the late creative painter as “an endlessly inventive artist, with a unique vision of the world.”

Similarly, the mayor of West Yorkshire, Tracy Brabin, called Mr Hockney “Yorkshire’s finest” whose pioneering works were characterised by vivid colour and inspiring.

Artist Hockney was born in 1937, studied art at Bradford College, and was famous for selling a portrait of his father at his first exhibition, at the Yorkshire artists’ exhibition in 1957, for £10.

Some of his famous paintings include A Bigger Splash; Portrait of an Artist; Mr and Mrs Clark and Percy; Peter Getting Out of Nick’s Pool; The Arrival of Spring, among others.
