A 40-year-old businesswoman, Mercy Nwankwo, was on Tuesday arraigned in a Magistrates’ Court in Gwagwalada, Federal Capital Territory for allegedly biting the finger of one Rosemary Onoja and inflicting deep injury.

The police charged Nwankwo, who resides in Kuje road, Gwagwalada, FCT with causing grievous hurt.

He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Prosecutor, Dabo Yakubu, told the court that the complainant, Onoja of Dagiri Gwagwalada, FCT, reported the matter at the police station on March 12.

Mr Yakubu said that the defendant, on the same day, went to the complainant’s restaurant and along the line an argument ensued between them.

He said that in the process, the defendant allegedly bit the complainant’s left finger inflicting deep injury on her.

He said that the offence contravened the provision of Section 248 of the Penal Code.

The Defence Counsel, Lesley Mukoro, in an oral application, prayed the court to grant his client bail.

He said that the defendant would not jump bail, but make herself available until the determination of the case.

Mr Mukoro cited Sections 158 and 159 of Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) 2015, to buttress his claims.

The Magistrate, Olatunji Oladunmoye, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500, 000 with one reasonable surety in like sum.

Oladunmoye ordered that the surety must depose to an affidavit of means and must reside in a verifiable address within the jurisdiction of the court.

He adjourned the case until April 14, for hearing.
