COAS reaffirms commitment to tackling insecurity as Nigerian Army marks 163rd anniversary

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu has urged officers, soldiers, civilian staff, veterans and their families to remain steadfast in their commitment to defending Nigeria.
Mr Shaibu made the call in a goodwill message to the Nigerian Army family during the Juma’at prayers on Friday, as part of activities marking the Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL) 2026.
He described the anniversary as an opportunity to thank God, reflect on the army’s journey, celebrate its achievements, honour fallen heroes and renew commitment to the defence of the nation.
According to him, the Nigerian Army has remained a symbol of patriotism, resilience, sacrifice and unwavering commitment to national service for 163 years.
He also said that the army had continued to adapt to emerging security challenges while remaining focused on its constitutional responsibility of defending the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The COAS noted that the 2026 NADCEL theme, “Protecting the Nation and Serving the People: A Way Forward for the Nigerian Army,” underscored the army’s commitment to the safety, prosperity and trust of Nigerians.
“Our troops remain actively engaged in operations aimed at combating terrorism, insurgency, banditry, kidnapping, oil theft and other criminal activities threatening the peace and stability of our nation.
“In spite of the complexity of these security challenges, the Nigerian army has continued to record notable achievements across the various theatres of operation,” he said.
He commended officers and soldiers for their loyalty, discipline, courage and professionalism, saying their efforts had led to the neutralisation of criminal elements, dismantling of terrorist enclaves, the rescue of hostages and restoration of peace in several communities.
He reiterated that his command philosophy remained focused on transforming the Nigerian army into a more professional, adaptable, combat-ready and resilient force capable of operating effectively within a joint and multi-agency environment.
Mr Shaibu said the “Soldier-First” culture remained central to the philosophy, with greater emphasis on personnel welfare through improved accommodation, healthcare, training opportunities and educational support.
He added that the federal government’s approval for increased recruitment would further strengthen the army’s operational capacity to tackle contemporary security threats.
He paid tribute to fallen soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice in defence of the country and also acknowledged the contributions of wounded personnel and veterans.
He also appreciated the families of serving personnel for their patience, sacrifices and unwavering support, describing them as a critical pillar of the army’s operational success.
Mr Shaibu further expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his continued support and commitment to strengthening the operational capabilities and welfare of the armed forces.
He urged Nigerians to pray for the country, its leaders and security personnel, while calling on army personnel to uphold the core values of loyalty, discipline, integrity, selfless service and professionalism.
“May Almighty God continue to bless and protect the Nigerian army, the Armed Forces of Nigeria and the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” he said.
