Nigerians on social media have applauded Canada for rejecting asylum applications of retired police officers.

They are also urging it and other Western countries to increase the number of visa rejections for corrupt public officials and politicians.

In February, Peoples Gazette reported how Canadian immigration authorities rejected asylum applications of retired officers on the ground that the Nigeria Police Force is notorious for human rights abuse, extortion, bribery, and other vices.

Citing court documents, The Gazette reported how retired officers Martins Peter Nwokolo, Wale Akinpelu and his wife, Ajarat Mojirola, were denied asylum on the ground that the Nigeria Police Force is notorious for extortion, bribery, and other vices.

Reacting to Mr Akinpelu, a retired police officer and his family’s asylum application rejection, many Nigerians on X said it was “good news” and a welcome development.

An X user, @itleeswhag, said, “If all the countries in Europe, Asia and America become like Canada, African leaders might readjust. Deny the visas especially when they are critically ill. Deny them Visa if the hold or held a political office. Let them fix their country.”

Another user, @Captcash001, said, “I wish the western world will adopt nd sustain this, deny African politicians seeking a long stay visa/assylum/ citizenship. And deny them visa wen they want to go for medical tourism. This will force them to fix Africa and ultimately reduce illegal immigration to the west.”

“The Nigeria police force is one of the most corrupt bad actors in Nigeria. Anyone who passed through the establishment or community is assumed corrupt and rotten until proven otherwise, and in most cases this assumption is factually true even without concrete proof,” @ToksDuttie said.

@Jonehmk said, “That’s better. At least this may send signals to the NPF and other security agencies to be more proactive when carrying out their duties with civilians to avoid human rights violation!”

“It is revealing that the reputation of the Nigerian police could follow officers and their wives all the way to Canada. This could serve as a note of warning to others. You cannot spoil your country and run to another one,” @Uche_Igwe said.

Some others cheered Canadian authorities for rejecting asylum applications of retired Nigeria police officers, saying it should teach other public officials lessons that there is no haven for them.

@My_viewspedia said, “This is a positive development from Canada. You will be deported if you flee to Canada to seek asylum after committing a crime or participating in human rights violations in Nigeria.”
