Court orders police to probe two companies in N140m fraud
An Upper Area Court in Gwagwalada has ordered the police to investigate an allegation of cheating to the tune of N140 million against Wilson Multimedia Technology Concepts Ltd and Wilbeko Global Resources Ltd and their owners, Wilson and Blessing Unachukwu.
The complainants, Olusola Babalola and Yusuf Adebayo, alleged that they loaned the companies and their owners N140 million to invest in a contract.
They accused the companies and their owners of cheating them.
Delivering a ruling, the judge, Sani Umar, ordered that the matter be referred to the Commissioner of Police, FCT, for further investigation.
Mr. Umar disclosed that the Deputy Inspector-General of Police had written to FCT courts that cases should no longer be referred to police teams or the inspector-general of police office for investigation.
According to him, cases should be referred to police commissioners, area commanders, or police divisions in the FCT for investigation.
“This letter by the DIG of police informed this order as directed by the Chief Justice of the FCT and Grand Khadi of FCT,” he said.
The judge adjourned the case until March 29, for a mention.
Earlier, counsel to the complainants, R.A. Sadiq, objected to the defence counsel’s motion, M.A. Igwe, to refer the case to I-G Monitoring Unit, Force Headquarters for investigation.
Mr. Sadiq said the defence counsel had no right to decide where a case should be referred for investigation.
He added that the case, alleged criminal breach of trust, contravened section 312 of the penal Code.
