D’Tigress win fifth Afrobasket championship, await Tinubu’s $100,000 largesse

Nigeria’s D’Tigress clinched a record-breaking fifth consecutive continental title after a hard-fought 78-64 win over Mali in the final of the 2025 Women’s AfroBasket Championship in Abidjan on Sunday.
The victory not only extended their dominance in the competition but also marked their 29th straight AfroBasket win, a run that began in 2015.
It was a tense and physical encounter at the Palais des Sports de Treichville, with Mali determined to end Nigeria’s reign. The Malians came out strong, taking an early lead and showing defensive resilience. By the end of the first quarter, they had edged ahead, unsettling the Nigerian side with aggressive plays and accurate shooting.
But Nigeria regrouped and levelled the scores by halftime. Led by their experienced core and a tactical adjustment from the coaching bench, D’Tigress turned the tide in the third quarter, outpacing Mali with a high intensity press and quick transition baskets.
By the fourth quarter, the momentum had shifted entirely in Nigeria’s favour. Their depth, athleticism, and superior ball movement overwhelmed the Malian defence. Standout performances from team veterans and a dominant rebounding effort sealed a comfortable 14-point win.
With this triumph, D’Tigress became the first team in AfroBasket women’s history to win five consecutive titles, following victories in 2017, 2019, 2021, and 2023. The win also brings their total AfroBasket titles to seven, matching Senegal’s record for most titles by any African nation.
Forty-eight hours before the final, D’Tigress had been pushed to the limit by Senegal in a dramatic semi-final clash. Despite a shaky third quarter that saw them trail by double digits, the Nigerians mounted a stunning fourth-quarter comeback led by Ezinne Kalu, who provided a spark on both ends of the court. Nigeria eventually won 75–68, setting the stage for their date with destiny.
