The first gold medal has been won after the conclusion of the first event of the 20th National Sports Festival (Edo 2020) which commenced on Sunday.

Cyclist, Ese Ukpeseraye, representing Delta State, won the gold of the 80 kilometre cycling road race event after out-racing 12 other competitors, Plustv Africa reports.

Coming second after first placed Ukpeseraye were two siblings; Comfort and Grace Ayuba, representing Edo State. The pair finished 2nd and 3rd respectively to win the silver and bronze medals.

In a bid for its athletes to perform excellently at the event as well as reignite the rivalry with neighbouring Edo state, the Delta State governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, had before the state’s contingent departed for the festival, promised a reward of N1 million for every gold medal won.

More medals are still up for grabs in the cycling event which continues tomorrow.

The opening ceremony of the NSF will take place on April 6, 2021.
