A 45-year-old woman, Yemisi Najimu, has been sentenced by an Ekiti State High Court to 10 years imprisonment with an option of N70,000 fine for attempted murder.

The convict was arraigned on a three-count charge of attempted murder, acts intended to cause grievous harm and occasioning harm.

The prosecutor, Dolapo Oyewole, told the court that Ms Najimu attempted to murder, cause grievous harm and assaulted one Bosede Ojo.

Mr Oyewole called five witnesses to prove the case and tendered statements from Ms Najimu and the victim.

He said that the defendant committed the offence on August 26, 2019, at No. 20, Afro Akinyede Estate, Odo Ado, in Ado Ekiti.

The prosecutor told the court that Ms Najimu and her son were beating up Ms Ojo’s child, and while intervening to stop the fight, the defendant descended on her.

Mr Oyewole said that Ms Ojo, who was eight months pregnant, was pushed and fell on the ground, which led to the abrupt delivery of the pregnancy in the hospital through cesarean section.

According to him, the offence contravened Sections 320 (1), 322 and 355 of the Criminal Code Law, Cap C16, Laws of Ekiti State, 2012.

Delivering judgment, Justice Lekan Ogunmoye said, “What the convict did was reprehensible enough.

“Therefore, the punishment would serve as a deterrent to her and others who may wish to behave similarly in future.”
