The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has cautioned motorists in Akwanga Local Government Area, Nasarawa State, against buying fairly used tyres.

Ibrahim Maiyaki-Bazama, Nasarawa State Sector Commander of the FRSC, gave the advice during the inauguration of 2022 “ember” months campaign at Akwanga motor park on Friday, with the theme: “Avoid Speeding, Overloading and the use of unsafe Tyres to Arrive Alive.”

“Motorists should cultivate the habit of always buying brand new tyres because this would help in preventing accidents on our roads and it is also good for the performance of the car.

“Buying fairly used tyres is not good because they must have expired or the tyre might not be good for the kind of roads we have in the country,” he added.

He attributed more than 75 per cent of road crashes in Nasarawa State since January to  speeding, urging motorists to be cautious.

He also advised both commercial private vehicles drivers to desist from overloading and other dangerous practices in order to remain safe.

On his part, Bishop Agounorobo-Agborie, Unit Commander of Akwanga, said the “ember” months’ campaign was aimed at enlightening drivers on safety rules and its implications in order to curtail road crashes.

He also warned those in the habit of taking drugs or drinking alcohol before driving to desist or be made to face wrath of the law.

Mr Agounorobo-Agborie said that officers of the commission had been deployed to strategic locations in the area to ensure smooth flow of traffic.

The Akwanga Unit Commander urged members of the public to always cooperate with the commission for the safety of the highways.

Officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) were at the event to sensitise drivers on the need to shun drugs when driving.

The FRSC also offered free medical treatment to drivers and other road users in the area.
