Enugu State Commissioner for Health, Prof. George Ugwu, said the Nsukka General Hospital remains a flagship facility as the government intensifies efforts to reposition it for modern healthcare delivery.

Mr Ugwu made the remarks on Friday during an inspection of a new state-of-the-art oxygen plant installed by the government and health partners at Nsukka General Hospital.

He explained that the oxygen plant, along with its cylinders, would serve as a commercial platform to meet the needs of Nsukka and nearby health facilities.

The commissioner noted that the government had been upgrading the hospital recently to meet 21st-century healthcare standards and to address the evolving medical needs of the people.

He said the state government recently reconstructed the hospital’s main building, including wards, clinics, and reception areas, improving patient care and service delivery.

Mr Ugwu highlighted the arrival of a brand-new ambulance to the hospital and announced plans to renovate the old building into a modern hostel for the nursing school.

He added that the government planned to recruit specialised manpower, consultants, and healthcare workers to further enhance service quality and healthcare delivery at the facility.

Mr Ugwu hailed the leadership of Governor Peter Mbah, emphasising the administration’s commitment to revamping healthcare across all levels, including primary, general, and tertiary institutions.

He affirmed that the ministry of health was determined to maintain Nsukka General Hospital’s role in providing quality healthcare and training skilled personnel for the local population.
