Extradited Lagos brothers to appear in U.S. court Monday afternoon for sextortion
Two Nigerian brothers based in Lagos extradited to the United States will be charged to a federal court in Grand Rapids on Monday afternoon for sextortion.
The siblings are Samuel Ogoshi, 22, and Samson Ogoshi, 20.
During a press conference on Sunday, the U.S. attorney for the Western District of Michigan, Mark Totten, gave updates on the case of the two Nigerian nationals indicted in the death of an American teenager.
The U.S. Justice Department indicted the Ogoshis in May for sexual extortion of various young men and teenage boys in the Western District of Michigan and across the United States.
Mr Totten revealed that the grand jury alleged that the Ogoshis had been hacking social media accounts to pose as young women to lure the male teenagers or young men into sexual chats to get their sexually explicit images which they used to threaten the victims.
Specifically, Samuel was charged with causing the death of 17-year-old Jordan DeMay, of Marquette, Michigan, who was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in March 2022.
The attorney stated that “sextortion is a horrible crime” and that “to those who commit these crimes: we will pursue you around the world. And to those who are victims: please know we stand ready to help you.”
FBI acting special agent in Michigan, Devin Kowalski, said, “Financial sextortion is a global crisis that impacts teens in our country and around the world.”
Mr Kowalski added, “As this case demonstrates, the FBI is committed to working closely with our domestic and international law enforcement partners to prevent young men and women from becoming victims of this tragic crime.”
The attorney and Office of International Affairs had previously worked with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to extradite the siblings to the U.S.
“I am extremely pleased with how swiftly extradition efforts moved forward and am grateful to the FBI and our Nigerian law enforcement partners for their unyielding work to secure justice in this international sexual exploitation investigation,” added Mr Totten.
