FCT police detain officers for N2.3 million extortion

The police in the Federal Capital Territory have commenced disciplinary action against some of its operatives for extorting N2.3 million from one Nwosu Ndubuisi.
The police public relations officer of Zone 7 in Abuja, M.B Abdulkadir, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday on behalf of Assistant Inspector General of Police Benneth Igweh.
Mr Abdulkadir stated that the extorted sum has been recovered from the officers who have been identified and are now in detention.
“Further to the earlier statement issued on the alleged extortion of one Mr Ndubuisi Nwosu by some officers of Zone 7 Headquarters, Abuja, an investigation was carried out, the officers allegedly involved in the extortion have been identified and detained, while disciplinary proceedings have commenced against them.
“The sum of two million three hundred thousand naira (N2,300,000) has been recovered and returned to Mr Ndubuisi Nwosu.”
The zone headquarters police spokesperson said Mr Igweh reassured the public of working in line with the transparency and accountability policy of the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, adding that the outcome of the disciplinary proceedings will be made public.
He vowed that Zone 7 Headquarters will remain steadfast in its commitment to upholding the rule of law and public safety.
This development comes after an X user, @HarrisonBbi18, on November 9, narrated how the officers, in possession of arms, accused him of kidnapping and forced him to sell his laptop for N700,000 to bail himself before they transferred the money from his Opay account.
The X user wrote, “They came to my house fully armed and accused me of kidnapping, searched my house without a search warrant and found nothing; they took my laptop and emptied my Opay account.
“They took me to Banex Plaza to sell my laptop, which I used the money to bail myself out. They provided money point account 8219764152 belonging to JEMCY ENTERPRISE and forcefully took N2,300,000.”
