The Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has reaffirmed its commitment to the safety and protection of medical personnel throughout the country.

The ministry’s spokesperson, Alaba Balogun, said this in a statement on Friday in Abuja after the release of Ganiyat Popoola and Folaranmi Abdul-Mugniy.

Mrs Popoola, a registrar in the department of ophthalmology at the National Eye Centre, Kaduna, was abducted in December 2023, along with her husband and Abdul-Mugniy, her nephew.

Her husband was later released, while Mrs Popoola and her nephew remained in captivity until Wednesday when they were released.

In the statement, Mr Balogun said, “The ministry honours the bravery and dedication of healthcare workers who continue to serve under demanding circumstances.”

He also reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to work closely with security agencies to ensure a safe environment for all.

The spokesperson commended security agencies’ unwavering efforts and collaboration in securing the duo’s release.

He added that “their safe return brings immense relief to the entire healthcare community, who demonstrated remarkable resilience and unity throughout the challenging period.

“We extend our profound gratitude to the Defence Headquarters, the dedicated troops, and all military personnel involved in this successful operation for their steadfast commitment to safeguarding our citizens.

“We also appreciate the efforts and tenacity of various medical associations and professional bodies, whose advocacy and encouragement remain invaluable in bolstering the morale of healthcare workers across Nigeria.”

He explained that the ministry would continue to prioritise policies and partnerships to enhance security measures for a safe, supportive working environment for healthcare workers nationwide.
