FIFA president Infantino apologises over failed World Cup sales plan amid UEFA pressure
FIFA President Gianni Infantino has tendered an apology to the council for his failed secret attempt to sell part of the FIFA World Cup and other tournaments to private investors linked to President Donald Trump.
Reports indicated that the Swiss football administrator apologised for the incident during a three-hour FIFA Council meeting in Zurich, Switzerland, on Thursday.
However, several football federations, particularly in Europe, are still seeking more answers.
The Football Association chair Debbie Hewitt was among the administrators demanding further details about the controversial private investment deal, Folarin Balogun’s World Cup red-card controversy and the FIFA Peace Prize awarded to Mr Trump.
Despite Ms Hewitt, who is also a FIFA vice president, describing the meeting as robust, she said several questions remained unanswered, stating “One of the disappointing things is that we didn’t get answers to anything that we had specifically requested – for example getting the papers from FFE.
I asked the question ‘why not?’ – and we were asked to “submit those questions in writing. I think the man has to answer those questions and if he doesn’t answer those questions now, he’s not fit to be Fifa president – and that was what was shared in the meeting.”
Ms Hewitt added, “I’ve repeatedly asked for the papers to be shared. I haven’t received them and still in spite of the request today, I haven’t received them.
“It is the rationale for why FFE happened in the way that it did, the Balogun case, the Peace Prize.
“The responses to those questions, which I still don’t have answers to, will determine from my personal point of view whether or not Gianni is the right candidate.”
The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) also demanded that Mr Infantino release documents relating to the proposed sale of stakes in FIFA, arguing that the 20 per cent stake put on the market was being offered at a knockdown price.
UEFA in August asked a federal court in the United States for permission to obtain testimony and documents from FIFA entities in Florida for use in a planned criminal complaint in Switzerland against Mr Infantino.
