Former Arsenal striker, Jay Emmanuel-Thomas, has pleaded guilty to attempting to smuggle £600,000 worth of cannabis into the UK through London Stansted Airport.

The 34-year-old was arrested by National Crime Agency (NCA) officers at his home on Cardwell Road in Gourock, Inverclyde, Scotland, after 60kg (132lb) of cannabis was found hidden in suitcases arriving from Bangkok via Dubai on 2 September 2024. The drugs were discovered following what prosecutors described as a “very thorough investigation” by the NCA.

At the time of his arrest, Emmanuel-Thomas had been playing for Scottish Championship club Greenock Morton, who sacked him after he was charged last year.

He pleaded guilty to the offence in May, but reporting restrictions were only lifted on Wednesday.

During the hearing at Chelmsford Crown Court, prosecutor David Josse KC told the court that charges against two other people, Rosie Rowland and Yasmin Piotrowska, had been dropped. “They thought they were importing gold, not cannabis,” Josse said, explaining that the case against them was discontinued after analysis of Emmanuel-Thomas’s mobile phone showed they had not knowingly taken part in the drug operation. The two women wept as they were allowed to leave the dock after previously denying involvement.

Emmanuel-Thomas, who began his career at Arsenal’s academy, was once considered a promising talent. He captained Arsenal’s youth team to FA Youth Cup glory in 2009 and made his only first-team appearance under Arsène Wenger later that year. Though he never broke into the top flight permanently, he went on to enjoy a steady career across the English Football League.

The versatile forward had loan spells at Blackpool, Doncaster Rovers, and Cardiff City before joining Ipswich Town on a permanent deal in 2011. He later played for Bristol City, Queens Park Rangers, MK Dons, and had a stint abroad with Thai club PTT Rayong in 2019. He also represented England’s under-17 and under-19 levels.

If convicted, the maximum sentence for cannabis smuggling is 14 years in prison.
