Former IGP Solomon Arase dies at 69

He retired from the police on June 21, 2016, upon reaching the mandatory retirement age.

Former Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Solomon Arase, is dead.


It was learnt that Mr Arase passed away at Cedarcrest Hospital in Abuja on Sunday.


No statement has been issued by the police or his family as of the time of this report.


Mr Arase, who served as Nigeria’s 18th IGP, was later appointed chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC) in 2023. He was removed from the position by President Bola Tinubu last year.


Prior to becoming IGP, the deceased had headed the Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Bureau.


Mr Arase was born on June 21, 1956, in Owan West local government area of Edo State and studied Political Science at Ahmadu Bello University, where he graduated in 1980, before joining the force the following year.


The deceased went on to obtain a Law degree from the University of Benin and a Master’s degree from the University of Lagos.
He retired from the police on June 21, 2016, upon reaching the mandatory retirement age.
