The Ghanaian legislative assembly has reportedly amended the anti-gay bill, which criminalises people to identify as LGBT and proponents for such an act.

According to a report by the BCC Africa on Thursday, the bill, yet to become law, proposes a three-year prison sentence for gay people and a 10-year sentence for advocates.

The measure comes only weeks after Uganda implemented a severe rule targeting LGTBQ people, along with other African countries such as Nigeria that have existing laws that punish gay rights. 

The bill has since drawn sharp criticism from international nations.

In March, U.S. Vice-President Kamala Harris, who had travelled to Ghana, Tanzania, and Zambia as part of an African tour, appeared before Ghana’s parliament in opposition to a bill that would punish those who support gay rights and call for jail time for those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender.

She was, however, criticised by the nation’s parliament speaker, Alban Bagbin, who slammed her for advocating LGBTQ+ practice in Ghana.

He noted that her speech was devaluing the people and the country.
