Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu has described the killing of five people in Golf Estate by a policeman as “sad” and “unfortunate.”

Mr Ugwuanyi said he was shocked by the violent attack resulting in the death of five people and others critically wounded.

The police command in Enugu confirmed five persons dead and four critically injured in Sunday’s attack by the police officer.

The incident occurred when a police inspector attached to RC Lotto Company opened fire on some residents of Golf Estate, Enugu, at about 9.30 a.m.

Mr Ugwuanyi, who spoke through his media aide, Louis Amoke, described the incident as “sad’’ and “unfortunate.’’ The governor, who visited the survivors of the attack at the Enugu State University Teaching Hospital, Parklane, Enugu, said his administration would offset their medical bills.

He added that the government had already deposited money with the hospital to ensure adequate treatment of the victims.

“I empathise with the victims and wished them quick recovery. I also condole with families of the deceased over this unfortunate incident,’’ the governor said.

Mr Ugwuanyi was reportedly received at the hospital by the Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Aliyu, and the hospital’s Chief Medical Director, Hyacinth Onah.
