Gov. Biodun Oyebanji of Ekiti State has advocated an inter-state collaboration in the South-West region for sustainable economic development.

The governor stated this at a meeting of the secretaries to the state governments (SSGs) in the Southwestern states in Ado-Ekiti on Wednesday.

He called on stakeholders across the states to work together beyond political affiliations.

Mr Oyebanji said great nations were not built on ‘solo’ efforts, noting that circumstances would eventually compel collaboration among governments, agencies and experts.

“The time has come for real action, and I must commend the Development Agenda for Western Nigeria(DAWN) Commission, for its excellent work, especially around the rail transport initiative,” he said.

Mr Oyebanji noted that the establishment of the South-West Development Commission was a step toward institutionalising regional collaboration.

He encouraged the SSGs to provide honest and research-backed advice to their governors.

“Don’t be afraid to tell your principals the truth. Quality governance thrives on frank discussions, not blind loyalty.

“Development is not about politics. Once elected a governor, you become the leader of all, not just of a political party. Collaboration is not optional, it is a necessity,” he said.

In her welcome address, the secretary to the Ekiti State government, Habibat Adubiaro, expressed the commitment of the state and the region to sustainable development and actionable resolutions aimed at shaping a better future for the zone.

Mrs Adubiaro emphasised the importance of collaboration, describing the gathering as a significant convergence of minds, experience and expertise focused on the much-needed advancement of the South-West.

“This forum presents a vital opportunity for us to critically evaluate our regional development strategies, identify areas of mutual interest, and explore sustainable frameworks for cooperation,” she stated.

She pointed out that key sectors, such as infrastructure, security, economic growth and social welfare, require strengthened synergy, among the states in the region.

Mrs Adubiaro urged participants to take full advantage of the platform to exchange ideas, share best practices and propose innovative solutions that would drive progress across the South-West.

In his remarks, the director-general, DAWN Commission, Seye Oyeleye, expressed the Commission’s readiness to support the region’s integration efforts, calling for unwavering commitment from all parties.

“We need your creativity, your courage and above all, your commitment to make this work.

“We must approach every challenge by asking, how can we address this, as a region, not just as an individual state.
