Governor Bago tackling communal crises in Niger with strategic collaborations: Commissioner

Governor Umaru Bago of Niger has intensified efforts to resolve communal crises, particularly farmer-herder clashes, through strategic collaborations.
Mua’zu Jantabo, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, disclosed this in an interview on Saturday in Minna, the state capital.
He said to address the perennial conflicts, the governor established the Ministry of Nomadic Affairs to foster inter-agency cooperation.
“The Ministry of Local Government works closely with the Ministry of Nomadic Affairs, Homeland Security, and other security agencies to tackle the crises.
“The governor’s deliberate policy has ensured effective collaboration among MDAs, enhancing our response to communal conflicts,” he said.
Mr Jantabo explained that the ministry’s strategy includes strengthening institutional frameworks, enhancing community engagement and promoting peaceful coexistence.
He said the governor’s commitment to resolving communal crises yielded positive results, with reduced tensions and increased stakeholder cooperation.
The commissioner added that the governor has taken a significant step to boost internal revenue generation with the local government Harmonised Revenue Law signed by the previous administration.
He said the law would address the lack of instruments for maximum revenue collection in some local government areas and ensure effective revenue generation.
Mr Jantabo said the state Internal Revenue Service (IRS) was collaborating with the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs to ensure seamless implementation.
“The partnership will plug revenue leakages and enhance financial resources for development projects,” he added.
The initiative is expected to increase the state’s internally generated revenue, supporting the governor’s development agenda,” he added.
