Governors at mercy of Buhari’s regime for security: Makinde
Oyo Governor, Seyi Makinde, says Nigerian governors are at the mercy of President Muhammadu Buhari’s regime regarding enforcing the anti-grazing law.
Mr. Makinde said, “They could say that governors are the chief security officers when it is convenient.
“But quite frankly governors are at the mercies of the federal security agencies to implement certain laws.”
The governor also pointed out that state policing’s unavailability moved the South-West governors to establish the Western Nigeria Security Network (WNSN), aka Amotekun.
“That’s why we asked for state police in the first instance. It is a constitutional issue, and in the absence of the state police, states in the South-West came together, and we formed Amotekun,” he added.
A human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, had faulted Mr. Makinde’s move to plead with Mr. Buhari to send more policemen to the state.
Mr. Falana had argued that police power is not exclusive to the president as the governors consist of the police force’s decision-making body.
Meanwhile, the governor has confirmed that 200 Amotekun operatives have been deployed to Ibarapa to combat insecurity in the area.
Recently, there was a clash between Ibarapa indigenes and Fulani in the area after the expiration of the quit notice issued by a Yoruba activist, Sunday ‘Igboho’ Adeyemo.
Igboho had accused the Fulani of kidnapping, killing, and other criminal activities in Ibarapa.
