A medical practitioner, Bridget Makanjuola, has told the Ikeja Domestic Violence and Sexual Offences Court how a 70-year-old man, Kayode Oshakoya, allegedly defiled and impregnated a 16-year-old girl.

Mr Oshakoya is being charged with defilement.

Ms Makanjuola, while being led in evidence by the state counsel, Babajide Boye and Inumidun Solarin, said that she got a referral from the gender section of the Police Command in Ikeja on June 20, 2018.

She told the court that the survivor ran away from home on June 15, 2018, after her father threatened to beat her for refusing to run an errand for him.

“The survivor ran to her neighbour’s house the same day and spent the night there. She said that the defendant had sexual intercourse with her at night, and she left his place in the morning.

“She also said that she went to her maternal grandmother on June 17, 2018, and stayed there for two days. While she was there, a distant relative also forcefully had sex with her.

“She said that she went home thereafter and reported the incident to her father,” the witness said.

Ms Makanjuola also told the court that she carried out a medical examination on the survivor and found out that she was pregnant.

“The external examination showed copious vagina discharge. The hymen was not intact. She was later sent for laboratory examination, and the result from there was positive.

“Based on my findings, I made a conclusion of sexual assault of a minor leading to pregnancy,” she said.

The police referral letter and medical report were admitted as evidence.

Under cross-examination, the witness said that her findings indicated sexual assault on the survivor, but she could not confirm who assaulted her.

She also said that she could not ascertain the date and the time of the pregnancy and advised the victim’s father to take her to the hospital for a scan.

“We carried out a test based on what the survivor said that two perpetrators sexually assaulted her and confirmed that she was pregnant.

“However, I cannot say whether the survivor could have been having numerous sex prior to the incident,” she said.

The prosecution alleged that the defendant, with others still at large, committed the offence on June 18, 2018, in the Bariga area of Lagos State.

Justice Ramon Oshodi adjourned the case until September 20 for a continuation of trial.
