Hundreds of people are believed to be trapped at Hong Kong’s World Trade Centre following a major fire outbreak on Wednesday morning.

According to The South China Daily Post, more than 300 people are feared to be trapped the fire broke out at lunchtime local time on Wednesday, December 15.

Fire crews have rushed to the 38-storey building on Gloucester Road, Causeway Bay, at around 12:37 p.m. (4:27 a.m. GMT) to put out the fire, which sources claimed started in an electrical switch room before ripping through the building’s scaffolding.

Police said a woman in her 60s was lying in a semi-conscious state in hospital and suffering from smoke inhalation, and three others were also reportedly unwell after the fire.

According to reports, shoppers and restaurant-goers are among those still within the building, which operates as a mall and office tower.

The Hong Kong Free Press added that the fire was still ongoing, and firefighters were rescuing people using emergency ladders.

Over 150 persons have been evacuated.
