Ibadan LG chairman counters NRC’s allegation of leading thugs to vandalise railway property

The Chairman, Ibadan South-West Local Government, Kehinde Akande, has denied reports that his council vandalised property of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) around the Alesinloye railway lines in Ibadan, Oyo State.
Mr Akande made the denial while speaking with journalists in Ibadan on Wednesday, while reacting to allegations that he led thugs to vandalise the NRC property on Tuesday.
The council was accused of destroying rails, sleepers, signal poles, counting boards, perimeter fences and residents’ belongings within the Mile 1 to 10 railway corridor, around the Alesinloye area of Ibadan.
Mr Akande, however, stated that the speculation had no iota of truth.
He added that on no account would the local government damage or cart away property belonging to the government, individuals or a group of individuals because of planned development.
He said, “This is a ploy by some enemies of progress to stop the local government from going ahead with the planned road construction from Alesinloye railway line to 110 Junction, targeted at creating a good road network for the people of the area and motorists in general.
“My mandate is to serve the people, and the project in question is part of a broader initiative to enhance road infrastructure and alleviate traffic congestion in the area.”
Mr Akande said the project had been approved by the state government over a year ago.
He said the adjustments were carefully planned and executed in collaboration with relevant authorities to ensure minimal disruption and maximum benefit for the community.
“The local government authority did not in any way involve thugs while clearing the road, but involved the security operatives to maintain peace in the area. This is against the news going around that the local government used thugs to scare people away.
“The property which they claimed were carted away from the railway station should be traced to the scavengers and not the local government,” he stated.
He emphasised the importance of the railway station and assured the public that the council’s actions were aimed at improving the overall quality of life for residents and commuters alike.
Mr Akande stated, “The creation of a more efficient road network will reduce traffic congestion and promote economic activities in the vicinity. I urge the public to disregard malicious rumours as I ensure that this administration remains committed to transparency and accountability.”
