The death toll of the collapsed building in Ikoyi has risen to six on Tuesday after rescuers dug up three more bodies from the rubble during an ongoing search and rescue operation to save people trapped in the building.

The 21-storey building collapsed on Monday, with several people trapped. Some people trapped at the building site were rescued. Others remain trapped as many fear the death toll will increase as the rescue operation continues.

The rescue operation has witnessed six people rescued alive.

On the first day, the rescuers had found three dead bodies and four people were rescued alive. However, over 50 people are trapped beneath the collapsed building. The bodies of the deceased have not been identified.

According to LASEMA, the people rescued have been taken to the hospital for medical treatment.

“As at the time of this report, a total of six (6) fatalities have been recorded,” said the director-general of LASEMA, Femi Oke-Osanyintolu.

“While the combined effort of LASEMA and her stakeholders, four victims have been extricated alive and are stable and currently being managed at one of our general hospitals,” he stated. “A further three were treated by the paramedics for minor cuts and bruises and discharged at the scene.”

The second-day update from the agency said, “Two people rescued alive just now.”

However, LASBCA noted that a 15-storey building was approved to be constructed on the land, but the owner built a 21-storey building.

They added that the material used for the building was inferior.
