Institute trained 45,386 Lagos drivers in one year: Official
The Lagos State Drivers’ Institute (LASDRI) conducted trainings for 45,386 drivers from May 2025 to date.
The aim is to enhance road safety.
The state commissioner for transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, said this at the 2026 Lagos State Ministerial Press Briefing on Monday.
The briefing was in commemoration of the third year of the second term in office of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
According to Mr Osiyemi, LASDRI has established itself as a foremost training and capacity-building centre for drivers in the state.
“The institute operates through three windows, including mandatory training once a year for all professional drivers, of which 43,758 were trained from May 2025 to date.
“The second is a structured training programme organised to suit the demands of organisations and establishments, and 103 were trained from May 2025 to date,” he said.
According to him, the third is a rehabilitation training programme for drivers apprehended by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority and Vehicle Inspection Service for contravening traffic rules and regulations.
He said that the institute had conducted one training in that category from May 2025 to date.
Mr Osiyemi said that LASDRI organised a train-the-trainer workshop for driving school operators and instructors on Aug. 14, 2025.
He added that the institute trained 150 drivers and dispatch riders in partnership with Nigerian insurers.
“Also, 116 electric mobility drivers were trained in collaboration with E-mobility Africa, a company promoting electric vehicle system transitions across Africa,” he said.
He added that LASDRI organised enlightenment/safety advocacy campaigns across some motor parks in the state with the aim of enlightening drivers on the need to embrace safety precautions.
He said that LASDRI also partnered with the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority to train drivers of high-capacity buses to improve safety.
Mr Osiyemi said that the state government planned to introduce artificial intelligence simulation for drivers later in 2026.
