The Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) Abubakar Malami says the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) were behind the burning of the Oba of Lagos palace, BRT buses and other public infrastructure during last year’s #EndSARS protest in the state.

In a briefing on Friday, Mr Malami said the leader of IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, through subversive and inciting online broadcasts, actively commanded and directed attacks on security personnel and facilities.

“As a result of these broadcasts, members of IPOB attacked and killed security personnel and burnt down police stations, correctional centres, INEC offices, bus terminals, the Palace of Oba of Lagos, Banks, hospitals, shopping malls and vehicles, amongst others.”

Mr Malami’s statement comes one year after youths staged a nationwide protest that lasted for over two weeks, demanding an end to police brutality and scrapping of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) notorious for extrajudicial killings and extortions.

Violence erupted after Nigerian soldiers opened live rounds on protesters at the Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos, creating a chaotic atmosphere for hoodlums who burnt down BRT buses, and other public infrastructures, while looting properties as they went.
