I’ve no regrets ordering police to shoot Kenyan protesters: Ruto

Kenyan President, William Ruto, has said he has no regrets ordering police to shoot legs of the protesters.
Mr Ruto made this statement in an interview with Al Jazeera on Sunday when asked if he regretted giving police the order.
He said, “I do not regret those comments at all because the law allows the police to use force when other people’s lives are in danger. The police know what they need to do and understand what is in their purview.”
Mr Ruto charged police to shoot at the protesters’ legs in July, a few days after at least 10 people were killed and 29 injured across Kenya as protests rocked the country in commemoration of Saba Saba Day.
Under Mr Ruto, the East African country has witnessed protests, beginning with the anti-Finance Bill protest in 2024.
Since the protest that claimed about 60 lives, youths hit the streets demanding Mr Ruto’s resignation.
Mr Ruto experienced waning public acceptance after the Finance Bill proposing tax increment sparked deadly protests across the country for over a month last year.
