Three police officers attached to former Central Bank Governor Charles Soludo have been killed by gunmen.

Peoples Gazette learnt the incident occurred at a rally organised by Mr Soludo at Isuofia community in Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State.

Mr Soludo is a governorship aspirant seeking the ticket of the All Progressive Grand Alliance for the November 6 governorship election in the state. He is viewed as the preferred candidate of the outgoing governor, Willie Obiano.

It is not immediately clear if the economist-turned-politician was injured during the attack, but witnesses told the Sun that Mr Soludo is safe but his whereabouts is unknown

The news outlet also reported that the state commissioner for Public Utilities, Emeka Ezenwanne, was whisked away by the gunmen.

Anambra State Police Command have confirmed the incident.

Police commissioner Sunday Kuryas told Channels TV that three police officers were killed by the attackers.

The police boss said investigations are ongoing and findings will be made public.

Violence has gained momentum recently in Anambra as the Eastern state prepares for off season gubernatorial election.

Weeks ago, gunmen intercepted a bus conveying some hardened suspects to court, killing at least two officials of the Nigerian Correctional Service.

On March 19, suspected cultists killed two, beheading one of the victims. The victim’s head was severed off and taken away in the presence of his sorrowful mother and siblings.
