Nigeria have lost another chance to grab an Olympic medal as one of its brightest hopeful, Enoch Adegoke, crashed out of the Tokyo Olympics 100m men’s final as he pulled hamstring metres away from the finish line.

Enoch was the first Nigerian sprinter to qualify for the 100m men’s final at the Olympics since Davidson Ezinwa in the Atlanta 1996 Olympics but the race ended in despair for the graduate of Obafemi Awolowo University.

Heading into the semis, Nigeria had two medal hopefuls to quality for the finals; Usheotitse Itsekiri and Enoch Adegoke. The other Nigerian hopeful, Divine Oduduru, had been disqualified for a false start in the preliminary heat.

Itsekiri came in 7th with a time of 10.29s in his heat and did not qualify while Adegoke came in second with a 10.0 second time and was on to the finals.

The finals began with a false start and British sprinter Zharnel Hughes, the only guy to run faster than Adegoke in his semi final heat, was disqualified.

When the race was restarted, Adegoke made a blistering start. He looked like he was was on his way to a podium finish when he pulled up all of a sudden and stopped running.

In the end, he could not finish the race and the extent to the injury is unknown.

It was certainly a disappointing end to a very impressive campaign for the 21-year-old who certainly have a bright future and a lot of time to make it up.
