Kaduna govt warns against unregulated waterway activities

Deputy Governor Hadiza Balarabe has expressed concern over unregulated activities along waterways, warning of their negative impact on the environment and livelihoods.
She raised the concern while speaking at Monday’s opening of a two-day seminar organised by the Nigerian Inland Waterways Authority, Kaduna Area Office.
Like other states, Ms Balarabe noted that Kaduna relies on water bodies for economic activities but faces challenges due to non-compliance with waterway regulations.
“Unregulated activities, including illegal structures, blockages, waste disposal, pollution, and environmental degradation, threaten the sustainability of these waterways,” she stated.
She stated that Nigeria’s inland waterways support transportation, trade, agriculture, and energy, making strict enforcement of policies essential for their sustainable use.
Commending NIWA’s efforts, she praised the enforcement of its statutory 100-metre right of way to keep water bodies safe, navigable, and ecologically balanced.
She also mentioned that proper implementation requires strong enforcement, community engagement, and collaboration across all levels of government and stakeholders.
NIWA’s area manager, Isah Aliyu, said the seminar aimed to strengthen cooperation between NIWA, state ministries, departments, agencies, and other stakeholders.
Mr Aliyu decried continued violations, noting that many residents erect structures along riverbanks without meeting required safety and environmental standards.
“If you observe Kaduna’s riverbanks, you will find permanent structures, including buildings and industries, within the restricted 100-metre zone,” he stated.
He explained that NIWA is introducing shoreline protection measures to prevent encroachment, control flooding, and maintain riverbank stability.
“The innovation includes planting trees for beautification while allowing farmers to continue operations after verification and approval,” he added.
