Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has received the prestigious Distinguished Merit Award of the Abuja International Film Festival (AIFF).

Mr Yusuf was honoured at the closing ceremony of the just concluded 22nd Abuja International Film Festival (AIFF).

This year’s AIFF, with the theme “From Script to Nation: The Role of Film in Shaping National Identity,” was held from November 6 to 10.

According to the organisers, the governor is recognised for exceptional commitment to the growth of Nigeria’s film industry, particularly Kannywood, the Hausa-language film industry based in Kano.

Presenting the award to the governor, AIFF founder, Fidelis Duker, said the festival recognises his efforts in revitalising the creative sector through infrastructural support and capacity building, among other initiatives.

The AIFF founder said the Kano State government had consistently supported the festival, acclaimed to be a foremost film fiesta that had redefined the cinematic landscape in Nigeria.

In his remarks, the governor, represented by the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Waiya, lauded AIFF for the recognition.

”This is really a deserving award. The state under my leadership has been giving maximum support to the growth and development of the industry.

”Kano State is the host for Kannywood, and as a government, we have ensured that there is an enabling environment in terms of security and infrastructure,” he said.

The Abuja International Film Festival is an annual event that connects actors, filmmakers, investors and policymakers, spotlighting Nigerian cinema on the global stage.

It features film screenings, panel discussions, workshops, masterclasses and awards.

According to the organisers, 1,687 film entries from 87 countries were received, and 71 exceptional films were selected to screen and compete for awards at the event.

The Nollywood movie ‘Safari’ emerged as the topmost winner and received the Golden Jury Award (Overall Best Film) at the event.
