The Lagos State Government has reiterated its commitment to supporting the growth and development of fencing within the state.

The state Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu gave the assurance during a courtesy visit by the Secretary-General of the International Fencing Federation, Gulnora Saidova, on Friday in Ikoyi, Lagos.

Fencing is a combat sport involving sword fighting.

 It is one of the five sports consistently featured since the first modern Olympic Games in 1896.

 Mr Sanwo-Olu, represented by his deputy, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, welcomed the FIE delegation to the state.

 He assured Mrs Saidova of the government’s readiness to support fencing development across Lagos.

 The governor stated that resources would be made available to promote fencing and encourage youth participation.

 He stated, “We believe every young person should engage in sports. We will support fencing and provide essential resources for its development.’’

 Mr Sanwo-Olu stressed the role of sport in youth development, health, and general well-being.

 He noted that the government created a dedicated sports commission to make sporting activities more accessible and efficient.

 According to him, the state remains open to initiatives that encourage youth involvement in diverse sports.

He encouraged Mrs Saidova to liaise with the Lagos State Commissioner for Youth and Sports for effective collaboration.

He stated,  “We need details about projected costs, target beneficiaries, and development plans.’’.

 Earlier, Mrs Saidova thanked the government for hosting international fencing events, including the African Fencing Championships.

 She said the visit aimed to explore ways of advancing fencing in Nigeria, particularly Lagos, State as a hub for African fencing.

 She added, “We seek support for fencing development in Africa, especially in Nigeria and Lagos State.’’ 

She highlighted the sport’s benefits for intellectual and physical growth, youth development, and international representation.

 The secretary-general requested formal recognition of fencing as a priority sport in the state.

 She proposed the inclusion of fencing development in the state’s annual sports budget. She also emphasised the need for a technical ecosystem, covering coaching, certification, and event planning.

 “Fencing demands both mental and physical skills, making it ideal for youth development,” she noted.  

She said that fencing could enhance education and boost Nigeria’s international sporting presence.

 “With Lagos’ backing, fencing could thrive nationally and elevate local athletes to global platforms,” Mrs Saidova added.

 She stated that FIE had already started working with UNICEF to use fencing as a tool for development.

 “This partnership could unlock new educational and developmental opportunities for Nigerian youth. By investing in fencing, Lagos State can nurture future athletes, coaches, and administrators while advancing youth development statewide,” she said.
