Lagos: Three dead in Lekki-Ikoyi bridge accident

Three persons died in a crash involving two cars at the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge toll gate in Lagos State.
An X user, Dr Love (@Drweloveu), disclosed that the accident occurred at about 1:00 a.m. and that one of the drivers was an 18-year-old without a driver’s licence.
The user wrote, “18-year-old driver killed three of his friends in the accident. Police arrested the remaining two survivors. The driver was about 18 years old and without a driver’s licence.
“About eight people were inside two of the cars when the crash happened, and sadly, three of them lost their lives. Two died on the spot, and one passed away a few minutes after being pulled from the wrecked car.”
However, he said the two drivers survived the crash and were unhurt.
According to him, residents and passersby had slammed police operatives for attempting to arrest the survivors instead of attending to dead victims.
“But instead of helping, the police who arrived at the scene handcuffed the survivors, acting like they didn’t care about the bodies on the ground.
“People in the area, including elders, couldn’t believe what they were seeing. They begged the police to focus on taking the dead to the hospital or mortuary instead of arresting those who had just lost their friends,” the X user tweeted.
He said the operatives, after many complaints, eventually let them go before the crowd tried to assist in searching for the families of the dead.
Confirming the incident, the police spokesman, Benjamin Hundeyin, said the victims were taken to the hospital, where three victims were confirmed dead.
Mr Hundeyin said, “The police arrived at the scene and took occupants of the vehicles to the hospital. Unfortunately, three were certified dead, and the police took their bodies to Yaba mortuary.
“The police equally took the driver at fault to the hospital for medical attention and left him in the custody of his family after they were contacted.”
The police spokesperson in the state, however, noted that the command is currently investigating the incident.
