Lagos to vaccinate 4 million residents by end of 2021

Lagos has so far vaccinated 800,000 residents with the first dose of Moderna vaccine and 310,000 with AstraZeneca vaccine.

• October 28, 2021

The Lagos State Government on Wednesday unveiled a mass vaccination campaign as part of plans to vaccinate four million residents by the end of 2021.

Unveiled by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the campaign tagged “Operation Count Me in 4 Million Lagosians Vaccinated Against COVID-19,” is in collaboration with the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA).

Mr Sanwo-Olu, worried of a possibility of the fourth wave of COVID-19 as the Yuletide approaches, wants residents 18 years and above to be fully vaccinated.

However, he said “Let me re-emphasise that we are not compelling anyone to get vaccinated. But, we want everyone to take it as personal responsibility, which is highly important.”

The joint committee set up by Lagos and NPHCDA will be opening vaccination sites in high traffic locations as part of the strategies to expand vaccine access in underserved communities.

Mobile vans would be deployed to move round boundary settlements in order to reach individuals in areas with limited access to health facilities.

“Once achieved, this will bring the State closer to reaching our promise to vaccinate 30 per cent of our population within one year,” Mr Sanwo-Olu said.

Since March, Lagos has successfully vaccinated 800,000 residents with the first dose of Moderna vaccine and 310,000 persons fully vaccinated with AstraZeneca vaccine.
