LASEMA: Death toll rises in Lagos building collapse

Nine people have been confirmed dead after a two-storey building collapsed in Lagos. A baby and eight others were reported dead on Thursday.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency said nine people were confirmed dead and 26 others rescued after a building collapsed in the Alakiji area.
In a statement on Friday, the agency’s spokesperson, Afolabi Olawale, said emergency responders were immediately deployed to the scene.
According to him, the Shark Response Team from the Lekki Base and the Alpha Cobra Squad from Onipanu arrived at the scene within 40 minutes, alongside other emergency responders.
Mr Olawale said those rescued received immediate medical attention from LASAMBUS officials before being taken to nearby hospitals for further treatment.
“The fatalities included four adults confirmed dead before rescuers arrived at the scene, while five additional victims, among them a two-year-old girl, were later recovered during the operation,” he said.
He added that the remains of the deceased were handed over to the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit for identification and subsequent release to their families.
According to the agency, its heavy-duty excavator worked alongside two excavators deployed by CCECC, helping rescue workers gain access to trapped victims and complete the operation safely.
Mr Olawale said rescue operations ended at about 4:00 a.m. on Friday after emergency responders had reached ground zero and accounted for all victims.
LASEMA expressed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
