A former chief of staff to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, has resumed at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, United States of America, as a visiting scholar.

In a telephone interview in Ilorin on Wednesday, Mr Gambari said that he had commenced work on his memoir as part of his academic engagement at the institution.

He said that his arrival on the institution’s campus began immediately with documenting his decades of experience in diplomacy, governance and international relations.

Mr Sulu-Gambari was received on arrival in the U.S. by a senior academic and departmental head in the graduate school of the university, Prof. Wale Adebanwi.

Mr Sulu-Gambari was appointed as a distinguished visiting scholar at the Center for Africana Studies, University of Pennsylvania, and his term is scheduled to run from January to August 2026.

He said that the appointment, approved by the university’s School of Arts and Sciences, was expected to see the veteran diplomat contribute to scholarly discourse and advance on personal research projects, including his memoir.

Mr Sulu-Gambari, a former Minister of External Affairs and Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, was also the founder of the Savannah Centre for Diplomacy, Democracy and Development, Abuja.

His memoir is expected to draw from his extensive career spanning academia, multilateral diplomacy and high-level public service in Nigeria and globally.
