Liverpool knocked out of Europa League by Atalanta; Bayer Leverkusen tango Roma in semifinals
Premier League side Liverpool is out of the UEFA Europa League after the Reds failed to overturn the first-leg quarter-final defeat at the hands of Italian outfit Atalanta in Italy on Thursday night.
Despite securing a 1-0 win over Atalanta courtesy of Mohamed Salah’s first-half penalty in the second leg of the tie at the Gewiss Stadium, it was not enough to overturn Atalanta’s emphatic 3-0 win at Anfield last Thursday.
Jurgen Klopp’s men controlled the game for the most part in their bid to score as many goals as possible to progress to the next stage of the tournament, but they were limited to that first-half goal by the well-coordinated Atalanta defence.
Atalanta’s wonderful performance over the two legs ensured the Italian side reached the semifinals of the Europa League on a 3-1 aggregate scoreline.
Meanwhile in London, another English team, West Ham United were knocked out of the competition by newly crowned German champions Bayer Leverkusen on 3-1 aggregate score.
Leverkusen won the first leg 2-0 in Germany last week and played out a 1-1 against the reigning Conference League champions at the London Stadium to reach the last four of the Europa League.
Thirteen minutes in, West Ham struck first thanks to Michail Antonio’s header, which apparently gave the Hammers high hopes of getting back into the quarter-final tie, but that ended in the 89th minute when Jeremie Frimpong equalised for the visitors.
Leverkusen will now face Italian side Roma, who knocked out another Italian club, AC Milan, for a place in the final of this season’s tournament, while Atalanta will face either Benfica or Marseille.
