Man, 40, in court over N1.2 million sachet water machine fraud

The police in Lagos State on Tuesday arraigned a 40-year-old man, Sunday Adeogun, before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly obtaining N1.2 million under the pretext of buying a sachet water machine.
The defendant, an estate manager, who resides in Itori area of Abeokuta, Ogun State, is standing trial on a two-count charge of obtaining by false pretences and stealing.
The prosecutor, Inspector Innocent Odugbo, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on February 10, at Oshodi, Lagos State.
Mr Odugbo said that the defendant obtained N1.2 million from the complainant, Ahmed Ibrahim, under the guise of buying a sachet water machine for him but failed to do so.
According to him, the defendant converted the money to his own personal use.
The offences, according to the prosecutor, contravene Sections 287 and 314 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The Magistrate, S.O. Obasa, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N300,000 with two sureties in like sum.
Mrs Obasa adjourned the case until May 16 for mention.
