The Nasarawa State government has expressed worry about the increasing cases of hypertensive patients in the state.

John Damina, permanent secretary of the Ministry of Health, said this at a media briefing on Friday in Lafia to commemorate 2024 World Hypertension Day.

According to him, the ministry was worried because hypertension, known commonly as high blood pressure (BP), has no symptoms but could lead to serious health complications if left untreated.

The permanent secretary encouraged members of the public, especially civil servants and business people, to always undergo regular checks to determine their status.

“Everyone is encouraged to know his or her BP reading and seek prompt intervention if there is a deviation from normal to live longer.

“Knowing your status will also help you adopt a healthy lifestyle, such as eating a balanced diet, regular exercise and managing stress,” he added.

Mr Damina further called on public members to monitor their BP regularly, especially those with risk factors such as family history, obesity, or a sedentary lifestyle.

“Early detection of high blood pressure allows for timely intervention and reduces the risk of heart diseases, strokes, and other related conditions,” he said.

The PS further said the media briefing aimed to create awareness to enable the public to make informed choices to reduce the burden of hypertension in the state.

The permanent secretary noted that the government was conducting free screenings in motor parks, markets, worship centres, and offices as part of the activities to mark the day.

“Those found to be hypertensive will be referred to medical facilities in the state for medication,” he added.
