Nepal holds first general election after 2025 youth-led protests toppled govt
Some months after violent youth-led protests toppled Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s government, Nepal held its first general election on Thursday.
About 19 million Nepalese, including almost one million first-time voters, were registered to participate in the 5 March election for the House of Representatives.
Acting chief election commissioner, Ram Prasad Bhandari, at a press conference, said about 60 per cent turnout was recorded in the election for the 275-member House of Representatives.
“Apart from a few isolated incidents of obstruction, the preliminary reports from the national and international observers deployed to monitor the election also indicate that the election has been conducted peacefully,” Mr Bhandari said.
Mr Oli, the ousted prime minister, and Balen Shah, the ex-rapper mayor, are among the top contenders in the election.
Counting of votes and announcement of results for the general election could take up to one week.
In September 2025, violent youth-led protests toppled Nepal’s government. About 77 people were killed during the protests last year.
