Nigerian lawyers, accountants, and chartered secretaries have been accused of presenting forged documents to the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) during registrations.

The CAC registrar general Garba Abubakar disclosed this on Wednesday, urging them and other stakeholders to avoid sharp practices while dealing with the commission.

Mr Abubakar gave the advice in Abuja when the president of the Chartered Secretaries and Administrators of Nigeria (ICSAN), Taiwo Olowokolade, visited him.

The registrar charged the lawyers, accountants, chartered secretaries, and others to adhere to professional ethics strictly.

He stated that the CAC was often bombarded with manifestly forged documents at the point of registration, warning the agency will take drastic measures against any erring professionals.

Upon implementing the Companies and Allied Matter Act (CAMA) 2020, the CAC registration portal had placed more responsibilities on professionals acting on the authority of their clients, said Mr Abubakar, believing that they would do the right thing.

The CAC commended the ICSAN management for maintaining professional ethics in their conduct and congratulated them on their reintegration on the CAC governing board by the CAMA, 2020.

He assured them of the commission’s continued support and cooperation and used the meeting to congratulate the newly inducted CAC staff by ICSAN.

Mr Olowokolade lauded CAC’s reform initiatives and pledged the ICSAN’s continued cooperation with the CAC.

He added that ICSAN was dedicated to enhancing corporate governance and public administration status and practice in Nigeria.

Mr Olowokolade, therefore, assured that ICSAN members would continue to adhere strictly to professional ethics in discharging their responsibilities.

He added that 14 CAC employees were admitted through the ICSAN “fast-track” in 2021 and inducted them as associate members on July 23.
