Nigerian police appoint rights expert Segun Awosanya to violent crime monitoring board

The Lagos State police command has appointed human rights advocate, Segun Awosanya, otherwise called Segalink, to the civilian oversight board of the Violent Crime Response Unit.
The state deputy police commissioner, Khan Salihu, announced Mr Awosanya’s appointment in a letter on May 7.
“I write on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Police Command CP Tijani Olaiwola Fatai, Psc, mnips to respectfully inform you of your appointment as a Member of the Command’s VCRU Civilian Oversight Board,” Mr Salihu wrote.
The appointment aligns with the Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan’s reform agenda to include credible civilians with proven track records in overseeing and evaluating certain police operations, as well as improving strained relations between the police and members of the public who have long lost confidence in the force.
“Your inclusion is expected to strengthen transparency, accountability, and public trust in policing through credible civilian oversight;” the letter stated.
Mr Awosanya’s advocacy to end police brutality and extra-judicial killings culminated in the 2020 #EndSARS protests and resulted in the disbandment of the police unit.
The police said Mr Awosanya’s campaigns against injustice and his efforts in defending the oppressed qualified him for the appointment.
“Your advocacy for human rights, justice, and accountability makes you a vital addition to the Board,” the letter stated. “Your expertise will support the promotion of rights-based policing and strengthen public confidence in law enforcement processes. We look forward to your impactful contributions in advancing transparency and fairness.”
