The U.S. government has again cautioned Nigerians not to overstay their visas, as doing so could ultimately ruin the chances of their fellow citizens seeking to travel for business or study purposes amid an active ban on non-immigrant visa processing for students and tourists.

“Visa overstays by Nigerian travellers can affect opportunities for their fellow citizens,” the U.S. Mission in Nigeria wrote in a short statement on Monday.

The mission said visa compliance will secure the continued access of responsible travellers who adhere to the rules.

“Strengthening compliance helps protect access for students, business travellers, and families who travel responsibly,” the statement added.

The statement comes amid an active ban on the visa processing of students and business owners who can no longer travel to the U.S. to conduct their affairs.

On December 16, the Donald Trump administration banned non-immigrant visa processing for Nigerian applicants in the B1, B2, F1, F2, J, and M categories, citing visa overstays and the absence of a reliable security framework to vet intending travellers.

In spite of the ban, Nigeria has continued to cooperate with the U.S. to eliminate Islamic extremists wreaking havoc on citizens.
