Northern group supports e-transmission of election results, kicks against electronic voting

The group urged the Independent National Electoral Commission not to consider electronic voting due to prevalent illiteracy in the North.

A group under the aegis of the Northern Youths Leaders Forum (NYLF) has thrown its weight behind electronic transmission of election results but says electronic voting should not be adopted due to mass illiteracy in the North.

The group said the deployment of electronic transmission of results during the Ondo and Edo gubernatorial elections eliminated malpractices such as ballot box snatching, thereby making the process more transparent.

NYLF however urged the Independent National Electoral Commission not to consider electronic voting due to prevalent illiteracy in the North.

Eliot Afiyo, president of the Forum disclosed the position of the group at a press conference in Yola, Adamawa State.

Meanwhile, the group which claims it was an amalgamation of 42 northern youth groups described the southern governors’ quest to produce Nigeria’s president in 2023 as a display of political indiscretion.

Mr Afiyo said the position was reached after a six-day consultative tour of the North-East, saying that the demand for presidency by southern governors is insensitive, offensive and provocative.

He asserted that southern governors are attempting to turn the quest for the presidency into a regional political war instead of a battle of political parties.

“This declaration tends to tell northerners that the 2023 presidential election would be North versus South instead of the political parties.

“We consider this declaration as provocative, insensitive, offensive, challenging and declaration of a political war which must be given thorough and intelligent consideration and action,” he stated.

The group had last month endorsed Bala Mohammed, governor of Bauchi State has its choice candidate for presidency ahead of 2023 elections. It boasted of its ability to make such choices with successes recorded since 1999.
