The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has charged private guard companies (PGCs) to prioritise timely intelligence reporting to strengthen response to emerging security threats.

The NSCDC Commandant General, Ahmed Audi, gave the directive while issuing operational licences to 28 PGC operators on Thursday at the NSCDC Headquarters in Abuja.

Mr Audi, who was represented by Deputy Commandant-General, Zakari Nengi, said companies would be held accountable for security breaches within their jurisdictions.

He stated, “As a matter of necessity, you are to submit intelligence reports monthly. Any report of urgent importance must be submitted immediately, as companies will be held liable for any breach of security that occurs in their areas of operation.’’

He noted that the training of private guards remained the sole responsibility of NSCDC and underscored the importance of standardised training for effective service delivery.

“You are receiving your licence at a time when a unified training curriculum is set to be launched. This means all guards will undergo the same training across Nigeria, regardless of their company or location. Guards must be trained and certified at NSCDC colleges or state commands before deployment,” he added.

Mr Audi warned that untrained guards would be arrested and prosecuted, and companies found guilty of employing them would be sanctioned.

He also cautioned against transferring licences and stressed that Nigerian law prohibited foreigners from owning PGCs.

He urged the operators to ensure annual renewal of their licences, noting that applications should be submitted at least three months before expiration to avoid penalties.

Also speaking, National President, Association of Licensed Private Security Practitioners of Nigeria, Chris Adigun, said the licences were issued only to companies that had met all operational requirements.

“This is a national service, though run as a business. Your licence gives you a vital opportunity to contribute to Nigeria’s internal security. I encourage all operators to register with the association, which provides a platform to engage with regulators and other stakeholders,” Mr Adigun said.

One of the beneficiaries, Chris Ezuma, expressed appreciation to NSCDC and its partners for their efforts in professionalising the sector.

He stated, “The collaboration and training opportunities have raised the bar in national security.

“We also commend the adoption of technology and regulatory streamlining, which will help ensure high operational standards.’’
