Ondo first lady flags off women’s pre-season tournament

Seun Aiyedatiwa, the Ondo first lady, has flagged off the maiden women’s pre-season tournament.
Mrs Aiyedatiwa, in her speech at the flag-off on Monday in Akure, noted that football was not only a game but also an empowerment for women in sports.
She said sports taught teamwork, discipline, and resilience.
Mrs Aiyedatiwa said it also created opportunities and broke barriers, which showed determination and support to compete and excel.
According to her, the tournament aligns with the broader goal of promoting the girl-child initiative aimed at nurturing young women to be confident, disciplined, and goal-driven.
“Sports, particularly football, remains a powerful tool in shaping character and offering meaningful life opportunities.
“I must commend the organisers, the Ondo State Football Agency and sponsors of this tournament for their commitment to advancing women’s football. By providing this platform, you are giving our young women the chance to showcase their talent, gain confidence, and prepare for the challenges of the new season ahead.
“This administration, under the visionary leadership of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, and particularly as a woman, is deeply passionate about the welfare and progress of our girls. I see this initiative as more than just a sporting event. It is a testament that our women deserve equal opportunities to thrive. I assure you that the administration will continue to promote gender inclusion, youth development and sports excellence,” she said.
Mrs Aiyedatiwa, therefore, urged all participating teams to compete fairly.
The chairman of the Ondo State Football Agency, Divine Ogbonnaya, said the pre-season would help the host team, Sunshine Queens Football Club, prepare for the Nigeria Women Football League.
Mr Ogbonnaya said it would also serve as an avenue to testing the mind and strength of the team and also “to fortify the team with good legs from the other participating teams”.
“This is to tell our girls to be prepared, that this is not the same game as the lower league, that we are in the higher team. So whatever mistakes the coaches and the technical crews see, they will have an opportunity to amend before the proper championship. That is the major reason for organising this tournament,” he said.
Sunshine Queens of Akure defeated Bravehearts Ladies of Benin 2-0 at the opening match of the six-team tournament.
