The National Commandant of the Peace Corps of Nigeria, Dickson Akoh, has called on the United States to adopt diplomacy and a peaceful approach rather than military action in addressing Nigeria’s security challenges.

Speaking at a news conference in Abuja on Wednesday, Mr Akoh said, “Military intervention, especially unilateral action, carries an enormous risk and will worsen insecurity and create a humanitarian crisis far worse than the original problem.”

He expressed concerns over recent comments by U.S. President Donald Trump, who reportedly designated Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” and threatened possible military intervention over alleged genocide against Christians.

Mr Akoh urged the U.S. government to engage Nigeria through diplomatic channels, emphasising that the deployment of resources for job creation, education, and peacebuilding would be a more sustainable path to lasting peace.

He called on the UN to urgently mediate rising tensions between the U.S. and Nigeria, stressing that “the peace of diplomacy must always be chosen over the trauma of military deployment. Nigeria requires collaborative, strategic support, not confrontation. This is where the non-kinetic approach is vital. 

He stated, “We stand ready to partner with international bodies and the US government through peaceful and developmental means. The deployment of resources for job creation, education, and peace-building programmes represents a far more sustainable and effective path to peace than the deployment of troops.”

Mr Akoh urged the U.S. to respect the country’s territorial integrity and engage through established diplomatic channels.

“Nigeria is a proud and sovereign nation committed to fundamental freedoms. The UN must act decisively to bring both nations together under its neutral auspices for mutual respect and non-kinetic solutions,” he added.

Mr Akoh reaffirmed the Peace Corps of Nigeria’s commitment to global peace, national stability, and youth-driven development initiatives that support the country’s security architecture.
