Plateau SUBEB opens bid for 258 classrooms

On Thursday, the Plateau Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) opened a bid to award contracts for constructing and renovating 258 classrooms and other projects across 17 local government areas.

Speaking at the event in Jos, the board chairman, Sunday Amuna, said the projects were part of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) projects for 2021, third and fourth, and 2022, first to fourth quarters, respectively.

Mr Amuna said the projects also consist of 68 stores, 68 offices, two Ventilated Improved Pit (VIP) latrines, and nine boreholes, among other things.

According to the chairman, the bid opening was intended to ensure due process and transparency in contract award.

Mr Amuna urged contractors who would be successful to execute the project according to specifications, adding that the board would not hesitate to sanction erring ones.

He further warned contractors to desist from executing shoddy and substandard projects, insisting that the government wants value for its money and would not tolerate any act of indiscipline from contractors.

“Successful contractors should note that they must execute these projects according to specification. Don’t do anything outside the specification.

“So, government and indeed the board will not tolerate and accept substandard job from any contractor, because it want value for its money.

“We will not think twice before revoking contracts that we think the contractors are not performing,” he added.

The chairman called on community members in the areas where these projects are domiciled to cooperate with the contractors to ensure the smooth execution and completion of the projects.

The chairman lauded Governor Caleb Mutfwang for releasing the counterpart funds, which enabled the board to access over N3 billion from UBEC for the execution of the projects.

Augustina Sanche, the UBEC coordinator in Plateau, warned successful contractors against absconding from sites.

”I want to appeal to our contractors to execute these projects for the sake of the children of Plateau,” she said.
